Is There Hope After Election 2006?
The midterm elections that turned over control of Congress to the Democrats were a defeat for Republicans, not conservatives, said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.Gingrich Sees Hope for Conservative Agenda
Many of the commentators, including Newt Gingrich, stated the following premise; that the Democratic takeover of the House is not a complete loss for conservatives and that in fact; some of the Republicans who lost their ways were replaced with moderate or conservative Democrats.
As a Republican, I chose to try to do what I believed was right and voted for Republicans with the belief that punishing the Republicans for disregarding their conservative constituents was not the answer. After learning that the Republicans lost both the House and the Senate, I was disappointed but not despondent about the situation. At the time, I knew that I did my part by voting and from that point on, all I can do (and must do) is pray for the elected officials, whether I agree with their positions or not. Of course at the time of hearing that the Democrats won the House, I learned that many of the newly elected Democrats succeeding over their Republican challengers were considered moderate or conservative Democrats. I hope and pray that these freshman Democrats stay true to their beliefs and principles and do not fall under pressure to vote strictly with their party line.
With Nancy Pelosi projected to be the new Speaker of the House, many conservatives are highly concerned that legislation tainted with "San Francisco Values" will be coming out of the House. I'm pretty sure that some in the House, including Nancy Pelosi, will attempt to do this to a certain extent, but one must realize that these individuals are Liberal, not necessarily stupid. Nancy Pelosi realizes that in order for the Democrats to maintain the majority in 2008, they are going have to compromise and lay-off much of their liberal values. They surely must know that the voters who voted in the Democrats were not looking for a liberal Congress, but were angry with the corruption, wasteful spending, and the hypocrisy of the Republican incumbents and were looking for a change. Nancy Pelosi is observant enough to realize that if her and her party strays too far to the left, they will not only lose both the House and the Senate, but they might as well forget about a Democrat being elected President. In my opinion, Nancy made a smart move by stating her commitment to Bipartisanship with the Executive Branch. On the other hand, her previous voting record indicates a reason to be cautious with her sincerity. Only time will tell how long she and her Party upholds this commitment.
Although I am disappointed that the Republicans lost both the House and the Senate, I sincerely hope that the Democrats are successful in securing our country and winning the war in Iraq. It is completely futile to hope that the Democrats fail. Under no circumstance can we afford to see our country lose ground (for the purpose of proving the incompetence of the Democratic Party), especially on the War on Terror. I also hope that the Democrats learn from this election and listen to the majority of the Americans who stand for many of the conservative values such as marriage being defined as a union between a man and a woman and the pro-life values.
