Tactics of the 'New Soviet Empire'?

I have come across several articles suggesting that the current Russian Government, under the guise of 'quasi democracy' continues to practice the tactics of the Soviet Union of eliminating the 'Enemies of the State'. As recently reported by the media, Litvinenko, a former KGB official turned Kremlin critic, died from poisoning. He apparently blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the incident.

I would like to bring up a previous occurrence that bears an eerie resemblance to this situation. Do you recall the 2004 Ukranian election where Viktor Yushchenko with his Western ideology, ran as an Independent and was highly disliked by the Russian government? The rival, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, closely resembled the Russian (Soviet) style of government. One of the unforgettable events from this election was the fact that Yushchenko was mysteriously poisoned prior to the election. Fortunately, the poisoning resulted in Yushchenko being disfigured rather than his death. The poisoning was eventually linked to a dinner party with senior Ukrainian officials.

Now here is an interesting thought; Was President Putin attempting to affect the outcome of the Ukrainian election by eliminating the competition with the hopes of establishing a valuable ally or possibly a precursor to a new Soviet Empire? Of course, this is only an hypothesis, however, one thing that is clear is that the ideology of President Putin and the current Russian government is the same ideology that led to Yushchenko's poisoning (Whoever poisoned Yushchenko did not like his pro-western ideals). Whether Putin was directly involved with Litvinenko death or not may not be crystal clear, but once again, the same anti-western ideologies were behind Litvinenko's poising. And of course, Litvinenko has been permanently silenced and can no longer criticize Putin and the Russian government. The below articles are highly interesting. The first article, amazingly enough, was published on the website of the Russian Newspaper, The St. Petersburg Times:

It is perhaps too early to discuss how and why Litvinenko was poisoned. Some things are clear. This was likely the work of the Russian secret service that had been after him for years...Russian foreign intelligence denies any involvement in his poisoning. It cannot deny, however, its long history of using poison as a weapon. The "Kamera," or as KGB veterans might remember it, "Laboratory No. 12," was founded in 1921 in a corner of Lenin's Cheka. This office innovated biological and chemical agents as advancing science and the Kremlin dictated. But one thing in their design has stayed constant: To make the victim's death or illness appear natural, or at least produce symptoms that would baffle doctors long enough to delay proper treatment.

A rare radioactive substance killed an ex-KGB spy turned Kremlin critic,..In a dramatic statement written before he died, the man called Russian President Vladimir Putin "barbaric and ruthless" and blamed him personally for the poisoning...The 43-year-old Litvinenko, who fiercely criticized Putin's government from his refuge in London since 2000, told police he believed he was poisoned Nov. 1 while investigating the October slaying of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, another critic of Putin.

TO DISSIDENT Russian intelligence officers now in exile or in hiding around the world and British intelligence operatives, July 9 this year was a seismic date...the Russian state parliament - unanimously approved new laws which allowed Russia's Federal Security Service to hunt down and kill enemies of the state anywhere on the face of the Earth...One British intelligence source said: "This marked a blatant return to the bad old days of the cold war when the KGB thought it could act with impunity anywhere it pleased."
