Social Isolation Growing in U.S., Study Says
Social Isolation Growing in U.S., Study Says
Americans are far more socially isolated today than they were two decades
ago, and a sharply growing number of people say they have no one in whom they
can confide, according to a comprehensive new evaluation of the decline of
social ties in the United States.
A quarter of Americans say they have no
one with whom they can discuss personal troubles, more than double the number
who were similarly isolated in 1985.Many people have already noticed the impact within our society as we become more and more isolated from our families. There are other studies that show that many people are moving to locations significantly further away from their families. In addition, many more are spending their time on the Internet or at home watching TV, away from social situations. As stated in the subject news article, people may have 100 plus friends, but these people are their cyberspace buddies from instant messaging or myspace.com. Even if you confided with one of your Internet buddies, the support and friendship they would be able to provide wouldn't compare to the companionship/friendship of a friend or relative living close by.
I heard about this problem today on "Take a Stand" radio show with Adam Mc Manus. He provided a resource that apparently a lot of people, including me didn't know about. It appears that Focus on the Family is able to provide at least some type of counseling, over the phone, at no charge. I would think that the counseling would be limited due to the limited number of counselors on staff. However, even limited counseling with a live human being is beneficial if you can't afford professional counseling. Click here (Answer: "counseling department") to go to that page on Focus on the Family.
My previous blog, coincidentally called "Yes, There is Help for Your Problems" also provides some good online resources to help you out. There are many people in this predicament and hopefully I can help by pointing out good resources. Please take the time to look into these resources rather than spending your time in frustration trying to solve your problems by yourself.
Also, if you have found any of these resources that I mentioned to be helpful, please post a comment on my blogs to let me know.
